This year has seen the Shropshire-based four-piece, The Rainbreakers, on an upward spiral, with their raw, driving sound, that is firmly in the rock camp, but with some blues and soul edges to it. The band have a very full gig calendar and here on the four-track “Blood Not Brass” EP, show what they are all about!
The band comprise: Ben Edwards (guitar & vocals), Jack Cooper (guitar), Peter Adams (bass) and Sam Edwards (drums) and were formed in 2012, and have since played many gigs both in clubs and on festival stages – already they have supported Chantel McGregor and Laurence Jones – check the website for details of all their upcoming shows.
The music kicks off with the an onslaught from Sam Edward drums on the rocking “Ain’t Nothing Goin’ On”, with fine performances from all; this is followed by “On My Knees” which rides on a nice guitar riff and is a little more restrained than the opener. “Blood Not Brass” has a definite Gary Clark Jnr feel to it with its strutting, bluesy groove and ‘treated’ vocal from Ben Edwards.
The last track, “All I Got” is a a mid-paced number that had me, in parts, recalling the late period of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. A promising EP from a young band, and I presume, a primer for a forthcoming album. Keep an eye out for these guys!
